The Millennium Banner

The banner was created as a celebration of the history of the village at the turn of the 20th Century.  It was created by members of the congregation, men and women ranging from the ages of 6 to 90.
The banner is some eight feet high and made on dark blue velvet surmounted by a gold Celtic Cross which reflects the memorial cross in the Church grounds.  In the centre of the cross is a sewn representation of the Church showing that St Mary's is at the centre of the history of the village. There are 36 individual squares of embroidery, each depicting a date and a relative event spanning the last 800 years.  Methods of creating the squares vary and there is a full index in the Church listing all the individual stitchers and what the date and square represent.  It is worth noting here, that one of the older members of the group finished sewing her square just three days before she died.
The creation of the banner was a pooling of resources and talents, some of which the participants were not even aware they had.
